Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
