Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
